A "Local" pub is a meeting place, a home away from home. The word pub is actually an abbreviation of "public house." The first "public houses" were established as an extension of the living room.
It was a place where people could gather together. It was a place where "everybody knew your name" and people actually cared about what was going on in your life. Serving good and healthy beverages, the pub became a part of many peoples daily regimen. It became known as a place where families and friends gather together to talk and catch up on the day's events. A place where close friends meet, businessmen 'talk the talk' and many can just be themselves. A place where all your cares seemed to fade away.
